Our Story

Our Intentions

Hi, I’m Astrid Rao, and along with my husband Sanjay Rao, we run the Native Place Guesthouse, a unique ecological retreat in Kamshet. In the late 1990s, we stumbled upon a piece of barren land overlooking the serene Vadivali Lake. With dreams of recreating the idyllic childhood I experienced in the village of Chuim, Mumbai, we began our journey to transform this desolate plot into a lush, vibrant haven. Initially disappointed by the lack of tree cover, we planted native species and nurtured the land, gradually turning it into a bio-diverse paradise filled with native trees, shrubs, and medicinal plants. Over two decades, we built a thriving ecosystem with features like a food forest, ponds, raised vegetable garden, and an outdoor kitchen.

In due course, I discovered permaculture, and it resonated deeply with me. We retrofitted our garden to align with permaculture principles, creating a dynamic, self-sustaining environment.

Inspired by sustainable homesteads of peninsular India, we incorporated permaculture principles to enrich the land. Our dedication to permaculture has not only allowed us to grow our own food but has also created a sanctuary for over 60 species of birds and countless insects.

The design of our guesthouse works in harmony with the surrounding environment, creating a multilevel structure that embodies an indoor-outdoor living concept. With high archways, abundant natural light, and airy interiors, the space effortlessly blends comfort with a sense of openness. Every corner invites you to connect with nature, whether it’s through a peaceful moment in the garden or the expansive views of the lake and hills.

Today, Native Place stands as a testament to our commitment to nature and sustainability. Our journey from barren land to a lush, green sanctuary is a story of hope, resilience, and the power of nature. We invite you to experience the magic of Native Place, reconnect with yourself, and be inspired by the harmony we have cultivated here.

Our Intentions

Welcome to Native Place, where nature’s tranquility meets heartfelt hospitality. I’m Astrid Rao, and along with my husband Sanjay, we embarked on a journey to create this unique ecological retreat. In the late 1990s, we discovered a barren land overlooking the serene Vadivali Lake, a blank canvas brimming with potential. Inspired by my idyllic childhood in Chuim village, Mumbai, and driven by the encroaching urban sprawl, we envisioned a sanctuary where our children and future generations could connect with nature, just as I had once done.

Our Story

Our journey began with the replanting of native trees, the first step in transforming the land into a lush, vibrant ecosystem. Over the years, we have meticulously cultivated a bio-diverse permaculture garden filled with native trees, shrubs, and medicinal plants. Our sustainable practices have not only rejuvenated the soil but also created a thriving habitat for over 40 species of birds and countless insects.

In 2016, the principles of permaculture deeply resonated with us, guiding us to retrofit our garden into a self-sustaining haven. Today, Native Place stands as a testament to hope and resilience, a place designed with nature at its core. We aspire to inspire the youth and foster a community of like-minded individuals dedicated to ecological restoration. Join us at Native Place, and become part of a legacy of harmony, sustainability, and natural beauty. Experience the magic, reconnect with yourself, and help us carry forward this mission of restoration and ecological balance
